Chapter 8

Auriolus

About two weeks later Malachite surprised me while I was reading.

“Young master, there’s someone here for you. I took the liberty of inviting the guest to the Blue Room.”

“For me?” I jumped to my feet. Who could it be?

My patience was tested as Malachite escorted me to the chosen receiving room with a slow, steady gait when I wanted to run, too impatient to be kept from this new occurrence for even one second more.

By now I knew that Malachite did nothing without a reason so the choice of that particular room… From what I learned from the servants the Golden Room was reserved for the most official visits, while the Green Room was the place where Malachite invited guest he approved of. The Blue Room…

The Blue Room was a test.

As soon as the doors opened my eyes snapped to the lone figure by the table.

“Oh, it’s you!” I exclaimed, recognizing Hellion, the red horned demon I spoke with at the Market that one time and who I waved to when I saw him in passing at the Reverly Festival. “Wait, should you be here?” I asked nervously.

“I don’t know… do you think that big demon of yours will break my legs for this?” Hellion responded seriously.

Shit, would he? I knew I wasn’t the only jealous one in our relationship. And there was the whole layer of trying to lie low, so I imagined there was a good chance Abaddon would object. Possibly violently.

Fuck, fuck, fuckity fuck.

“Ahem,” Malachite coughed politely. “Young Master Hellion was put on the list of allowed guests weeks ago.”

I gaped at the little twerp.

“You bastard!” I threw the book from the nearby shelf at Hellion. He ducked, laughing. “I can’t believe you, scaring me like that. You are going to regret this!”

Was a tickle fight in front of Malachite a good first impression? No. But I couldn’t bring myself to regret it. Hellion was a bitch. But so was I. We clicked from that very first day at the Market and, as Hellion kept coming back over the following weeks, I had a crazy thought: Hell was the place where I have made my first real friend.
